Closing the Gap with Digital Walkabout

Digital Walkabout empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander job seekers with digital skills and access, aligning directly with Closing the Gap Target 17: to have equal levels of digital inclusion by 2026.

Digital Walkabout is a unique program aimed at empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities by providing essential digital skills training and cultural engagement opportunities. Through a blend of cultural revitalization activities and practical digital skills training, Digital Walkabout seeks to bridge the digital divide and support participants in their journey towards sustainable employment.

As Australia continues its efforts towards achieving the outcomes outlined in the Closing the Gap report, ourDigital Walkabout initiative aims to target Closing the Gap Outcome 17: ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to information and services enabling participation in informed decision-making regarding their own lives.

Targeting to achieve equal levels of digital inclusion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by 2026, Digital Walkabout stands as a transformative initiative designed to bridge the digital divide. By focusing on key indicators such as access, affordability, and digital ability, the program aims to equip participants with essential digital skills and confidence, ultimately supporting their path to sustainable employment.

The program, spanning two weeks, offers a unique blend of cultural engagement and practical digital skills training. The first week, facilitated by cultural training partner Gadhungal Marring, immerses participants in cultural revitalization activities, fostering integrity, self-worth, and community belonging. Activities such as 'Welcoming to the ways of our ancestors' and 'My Story, Your Story, Our Story' deepen participants' connection to their culture and community.

Transitioning into the second week, participants receive their own laptops and engage in immersive projects covering practical digital skills and employment-specific activities. What sets Digital Walkabout apart is its seamless integration of cultural engagement into digital skills training, ensuring participants remain connected to their culture throughout the program.

Upon completion, participants are awarded units of competency including BSBTEC101 - Operate digital devices, BSBWRT311- Write simple documents, BSBPEF301 - Organise personal work priorities.

More than just acquiring skills, Digital Walkabout represents a transformative journey of self-empowerment, connecting participants to their culture and providing essential digital access to support their employment goals.
